Welcome to Gallivanters Diaries - a memoir of our global adventures
We love travelling. With every step, we create new stories of seeing mesmerizing places, tasting mouthwatering cuisines and indulging in local culture. We share our experience through this memoir.

Our Itinerary
We landed in Milan on Friday night to have full 3 days to roam around over the early May bank holiday. We chose to use Milan as our base because both Lake Como and Florence were within 2.5 hours train distance. On Saturday, we went on a day trip to Lake Como. On Sunday we went to Florence and on Monday we stayed in Milan and took the late evening flight back to London.

TIP: If you chose to follow our itinerary, we recommend staying close to Milano Centrale station because you'll need to catch one of the early morning trains for Como and Florence.

Day 1: Varenna, Bellagio and Lake Como
To experience the serene beauty of pristine waters of lake como with the backdrop of Alps, we took the early morning train to Varenna (Train to Varenna Esino Station). From the station, you walk along the coast and experience a magical morning in Varenna. We spent about 3 hours here. The lover's walk is a must do here. If you are here early morning like we did, do remember to carry some snack with you. The eateries and restaurants don't open until 12 in the noon. After we had soaked in all the beauty, it was time to take a short ferry ride to the world famous Bellagio. The ferry takes only about 15 mins. Bellagio was as beautiful as we had heard or more. Our camera could not do justice to what our eyes could see. We spent another 3 hours in Bellagio walking around the beautiful streets, window shopping, had a delicious lunch and then it was time to go to Como. Como has a city feel with a nice harbor. It has a very long coastline which is a must do and we easily spent another 2 hours just walking around the coastline, having the famous italian gelato. It was then time to take the train back to Milan

Day 2: Day trip from Milan to Florence
After a tiring previous day and a sound night's sleep, we were back again at Milano Centrale to take an early morning train to Florence. We had booked the train ticket in advance and were lucky to book a first class ticket. The journey was a breeze and we were in florence by 9.30 AM. Our train back to Milan was at 10 PM and so we had a full day ahead of us to explore Milan. From Florence station, we headed straight to Florence Cathedral. One of the best things about florence is that every thing is within walking distance. We walked around the city and saw all its majestic beauty. Our favorite spot was Piazzale Michelangelo where we saw one of the most beautiful sunsets.

Day 3: A day in Milano
With 2 back to back long days in Como and Florence, we wanted to take it easy on our last day in Milan. The weather early morning wasn't perfect either so it gave us another reason to start our day late. Milan is like any other big european city with a bustling city life. The public transportation is great and we went straight to Milan Cathedral. From there we again walked around the city and its top sights including the Sforaza Castle and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the top end shopping arcade. We had a wonderful lunch overlooking Milan Cathedral. By 5 PM we had to head back to our hotel to pick up our stuff and head to the airport.

Italy has so many places to travel and experience. Every area has its own unique charm and we just can't get enough of it. This was our 3rd time in Italy (more about it in next posts). Stay tuned for more.
